A Short History of Nyanda

Nyanda, a cherished family treasure for six decades, was once part of a much larger property, its aging fences the sole markers of promise. To secure the leasehold, our family tirelessly worked to transform it into an ideal cattle property. Its lifeblood, a perpetual spring-fed creek, ensured a steady water source, while abundant pastures sustained our herds.

Yet, Nyanda posed its own challenges with rugged mountains, sandstone ranges, and intricate gullies requiring horse-backed cattle mustering. Now, as Nyanda is passed to its third generation, it remains a loved place, cradling our heritage. Nyanda's future, entrusted to capable hands, continues to be a refuge for all who visit, preserving a legacy of natural beauty and family history.

Nyanda's Highlights

Consuelo Gorge Lookout

This stunning lookout is visited on our Highlands 4WD Tag-Along Tour, as well as the Nyanda Gorge Tour. It is situated on a plateau that overlooks the ancient Consuelo Gorge, one of the largest gorges in Carnarvon National Park, only seen from Nyanda.

Consuelo Creek

Consuelo Creek is the main creek that runs through Nyanda. The creek begins in the gorges of Carnarvon National Park by permanent springs driven by the park's geology, where rainfall from many thousands of years ago makes its way down through the porous sandstone before hitting a much harder rock, forcing the water out into the creek. That keeps the creek flowing, and the wildlife abundant!

Sandy Gorge

Sandy Gorge is a tucked away gorge on Nyanda that has very rarely been seen until recently. It is a short walk from our road to Nyanda Gorge.

Mt Carnarvon

Mt Carnarvon is a prominent feature of Nyanda, with its rich iron oxide stained cliffs towering above the surrounding landscape. It is seen on all of Nyanda's tours. Mt Carnarvon is much older than the white sandstone that makes up the cliffs of Carnarvon Gorge itself.

Three Peaks

Named by ourselves (it has no official name), Three Peaks is a very prominent mountain that stands high above the surrounding landscape. On one side is has huge sandstone cliffs exposed, and the other is a steep slope with lots of hidden gorges, hosting a wide array of unique plants and animals. It can be seen only on our Nyanda Explorer Tour.
